It’s a song as much about love as it is about doubt-using amendments, failures and retries as explanation to the enormity of the feeling.īut more than that, “Your Song” was a way to truly showcase Ellie’s unique voice for a wider audience. It’s attempting to communicate, but knowing you’re probably not doing it any justice. One about translating the emotions you feel abstractly, viscerally, into a language that can be understood. It’s a song about how language fails us all, how we just keep trying anyway. In terms of thematics, “Your Song” fits neatly into Ellie’s discography. Though she had intended the titular track to be the lead-off single, it was ultimately pushed back in favor of this cover of an Elton John classic–capitalizing on its feature in the John Lewis Christmas 2010 advertising campaign. In Novemeber of 2010, Lights was rereleased as Bright Lights, with six new tracks added into the mix. Namely, I wanted to start with the latter and then circle back to the former. Not only because that wasn’t the case for me (I didn’t start paying attention until later, but I’ll get to that), but because it felt important to make a distinction between Ellie Goulding as she was perceived by the public, and Ellie Goulding as she projected herself. For many people, this is where the story of Ellie Goulding begins.
